Statement of Intent:
Product 1:
In order to meet the brief I will select two different genders to front the covers of my fashion magazine. As the brief states I need to attract a target audience aged 16-25, which is a culturally sophisticated AB class, I will conduct research into real media text types that conform to this market.
The topics and themes from my research will inform my planning and selection of what to feature, for example an AB class would have a greater disposable income which enable them to spend money on fashion. However, I also recognise that I want to capitalise on contemporary trends that appeal to this class and age range, such as being mindful of ‘fast fashion’ and how recycling clothes or shopping ‘savvy’ from charity shops can still lead to a highly fashionable look but also remains mindful of the environmental issues attached to throw-away fashion. Therefore I intend to make this explicit and promote a fashion that is sustainable and ethical because I believe my target audience would value this ideology.
I intend to media language codes and conventions that conform to fashion magazines through my choice of masthead, cover and sell lines as well as the image and lexical choices of my text. The fashion brand needs to retain a register that is formal but speaks to an audience that wants something fun and easy to access because their professions are already quite taxing and demanding, so my fashion magazine needs to provide a space for them to relax, unwind and enjoy themselves.
My model selection will represent an inclusive range of genders and sexualities. I plan to stage the models in photo studio environments because I can reliably control the light as opposed to a natural outdoor location. The dress codes will adhere to gender stereotypes in the sense that the female cover will be bright and colourful whereas my male cover will feature more predominantly masculine tones and colour scheme. These choice will be echoed throughout my house style for each magazine but I will retain a clear brand identity through the use of typography and font types, choice of masthead and layout that works across both covers.
Product 2:
My website construction will focus on widening the content of the magazine covers and content pages. I intend to feature the front covers heavily on the website as the top banner purely because I am aware that the print industry is under increasing pressure to boost sales, therefore in order to encourage website uses to buy the magazine I would want to plug this aspect as much as possible.
Website codes and conventions such as a menu bar, navigation tools, composition of content in rows and columns in order to aid reading, bite-size copy with a high image:copy ratio.
The themes and topics will continue from the magazine with similar themes, topics, language and images. The online content will also need to offer additional experiences in the form of multi-media which I intend to use audio-visual content in order to engage viewers in multiple ways and keep my audience on the site. I will also include links to other social media platforms so that my audience become loyal fans of the brand.
Digital Convergence:
I will achieve digital convergence by keeping a clear house style across the magazine which will extend to the magazine. This will include typography, language register, formality, themes, images from the original photo shoot, colours and buzz words from the cover and sell lines.
